Tuesday. Tuesday is dedicated to grandma. Yep, every Tuesday, thrilling day of the week isn't it? This Tuesday finds me sitting in a laundromat parking lot, freezing my toes off waiting for the dryer to finish her 5 loads so I can start folding. Yeah, I'm doing my grandmas laundry, just like I did last week and every week before that since April.
Last April she was hospitalized for almost two weeks, one of which she was in a medically induced coma to help her body recover from pneumonia. It was 7 of the worst days my family has been through. They kept doing cat scans to check for brain activity, they kept telling us that although they had put her in the coma to help her heal, they weren't 100% sure she would cone out of it. We were scared, we were mad and then just like that, she woke up.
On the first day out of the ICU she told Ryman and I that she thought she wasn't going to make it there for a while & now that she had, she wanted to travel. She wanted to see the Statue of Liberty and the Lincoln Memorial.
She asked us if we could take her & we obliged, of course. The hilarity of the trip which became a dream come true for her in fall 2010, can be read about here if you're in the mood to laugh.
After she was released from the hospital she couldn't really do much of anything & honestly there wasn't much I could do to help her. Bedsides laundry :) which is why I'm here sitting in the car at
7pm on a Tuesday, hungry and tired, counting the minutes until I can go back inside and fold mountains of grandma clothes.
I love her and obviously God has given me the strength & patience to be there for her and to make her week a little easier, and so I show up and do what I can. She's at home making herself dinner instead of out and about on this rainy night lifting laundry baskets and folding clothes. Which makes me very happy to know.
We've gotten this down to a science and the routine is almost flawless, unfortunately for her, it's very much unlike my folding. I am quite possibly the worlds worst clothes and sheet folder! Throw some baby clothes at me and they will look store ready, grandma clothes on the other hand..semi disaster every Tuesday..
Something beyond ridiculous to add to my Tuesday story is that I worked today from 6am to 2pm, went home and ran 2 miles at the gym, drove to Alameda to spend a couple hours with my mom and 9 year old cousin Bobby, then went straight to grandmas after she got home from work, so the fun part could start. The laundry.
Seriously, I love doing it for her, I mean as much as I hate doing it every single week, I love doing it for her. Not sure if that makes sense, but I'm tired and it's late and I got to blast the stereo and sing my heart out on the drive home, which for some reason made me even hungrier. Which is, in turn, why dinner was a dream come true to come home to. A cup of brown rice, 4 cups of broccoli and 4 oz of chicken never tasted so good, well since last Tuesday anyway.
