Saturday was grandma’s 76th Birthday. Party at the Tolentino house, and by party I mean 7 people and 2 two year olds crammed into a 700sq ft apt and ate a ton of food! Jim and Leslie and Dominic came and little Dom seriously fell in love with guacamole, which was adorable. Gena bought ALL the groceries for dinner, which was amazing and Adam couldn’t stop playing with our cheapo Ikea lamp’s in the bedroom. Ryman and I spent the whole afternoon making chicken sopa.. don’t know what that is? Yeah.. um we didn’t either. But, whatever birthday girl wants, birthday girl gets! She had specifically requested it, so she got it! It’s tortillas and chicken and green chilies and secret chicken sauce and cheese, BAKED. The best part about it? Every single person in my family was surprised that it turned out edible… the look of shock on their faces as they ate was hilarious, most everyone had seconds = I didn’t screw it up. I made strawberry shortcakes and tried to balance it out with a plate full of grapes on the table, that no one touched. We made our Tolentino pesto mozzarella flatbread pizza and forced everyone to eat it all. Good times.
Funniest expression of the night was grandma’s when she realized that I didn’t bake her a white cake with pink frosting as she requested.. I copped out and bought a strawberry ice cream cake from Safeway. Yeah, I know it’s not good to do the exact opposite of what your grandmother asks for, but, time was short and I panicked.
Grandma almost didn’t make it to this birthday, and the fact that she did is something every single one of us is otherworldly grateful for every single day. In April after being medically induced into a coma and on a respirator, because she couldn’t breathe on her own, the doctor’s told us they would have to do a couple of scans to make sure she still had brain activity. Knowing that we were all so close to losing her was devastating. Little did we know that she is clearly stronger than anyone expected! Not only did she have plenty of brain activity, she woke up from the coma 5 days later and the second thing she asked me for after we brushed her teeth was some Oil of Olay eye cream. Ever the beauty. I remember she also complimented my watch that day, she could barely talk because the tubes had been down her throat for over a week, and she still managed to be kind and make me smile. She is such an inspiration to me, Love you grandma!

One for the scrapbook, me with my grandma and mom. It's 9pm on a Saturday and I can barely keep my eyes open. They both called me an old lady after I groaned about the mountain of dishes in the sink.
